On April 1, 1960, the very first pair of the 1460 boots, the symbolic Dr. Martens original pair, characterized by its yellow stitching, soles, and heel loop, was officially put into the production line. This pair of boots were originally designed for workers, postmen, and police officers for more comfort, durability, and lightness compared to other boots at the time.
Individuals with diverse backgrounds, like musicians, street artists, and other youth cultures, who identify themselves as whom stand out in crowds and on their journeys of self-expression, are invariably accompanied by a pair of Dr. Martens. Consequently, Dr. Martens has been embraced and subverted by these diverse groups of individuals throughout its history.
Specifically, the simple silhouette of the boots allows for creativity by the owner of each pair, thereby leading trends of street fashion. Additionally, DM boots’ outstanding durability and comfort make them ideal for shows, no matter for a grand debut or an underground music performance. Each of DM fans can tell which kind of attitudes self-expressions that DM symbolizes.
The preface of DM’s story was written in the factory located in Northamptonshire, the Wollaston Village and the story is still going on. Some of DM’s pairs, on which a mark of “Made in England” is found, are still produced here by a team of highly skilled bootmakers trained in traditional shoemaking industry. That is also a unique craftsmanship having been unchanged since the first pair of Dr. Martens boots born in the April of 60 years ago.
